(OLIVIA)

I couldn’t stop shaking as I fought with my hair. I kept looking at the ultrasound picture on the toilet next to me. I had a vision of me walking into my mother’s house and tossing it on the table. Just to see her smile. Just to feel that connection again.

The second I walked in, I couldn’t do it.

It didn’t help matters that Owen was there, having a cup of coffee with her.

I hadn’t talked to my brother all that much since the Slade incident.

I fixed my hair and tucked the ultrasound picture into my back pocket. I left the bathroom and went to the kitchen. Mom stood at the sink, pouring a half full pot of coffee down the drain.

“Mom, what are you doing?” I asked.

“Pouring a refill or two,” she said.

I watched the coffee go down the drain.

“Hey, Mom,” Owen called out. “You’re dumping it down the drain. What the hell are you thinking?”

Mom realized what she was doing and quickly stopped. She put the coffee pot down. She stared at the mugs and the coffeepot.

“Let me help,” I said. “I need the practice for my shift.”

Mom laughed.

She walked away and I poured two fresh coffees. I walked them to the table.

“Thanks,” Owen said. “I’ll leave you a big tip.”

I looked at him and shook my head.

I turned and left the dining room and went out to the deck.

It took all of ten seconds before Owen was out there, holding his mug of coffee, standing like the cocky asshole cop he was.

“Still pissed at me, sis?”

“You must be training hard to become a detective,” I said.

“Nice,” he said. “Want to tell me what’s on your mind?”

“You need to leave me alone,” I snapped. “My life. Everything. You don’t get it.”

“Get what?”

“What you did to Slade. You think I don’t know?”

Owen’s lip curled. “Fucking pussy. What did he do, call you?”

“No. He saw me again. We spent the night together.”

Owen’s eyes went wide. “When?”

“Months ago,” I said. “It doesn’t matter now. He took off. So you win again, Owen. But I’m the one who loses.”

“You lose?”

“Yeah. I haven’t seen Walker in forever. Which is good. Because I don’t love him. I don’t want to be with him, Owen. I hate him. How’s that for truth?”

I couldn't believe this was happening to me. That I was boiling over and losing my mind right then in front of Owen. And he just stood there, stone like, taking it all in.

“Keep talking to me,” he whispered. “You obviously have a lot to say.”

He sipped his coffee purposely loud. Fucking. Asshole.

“You have no idea what it’s like,” I said. “You’ve forced Walker onto me for a long time. You don’t get... the personal feelings and stuff.”

Owen nodded. “All I’ve ever tried to do is protect you.”

“I didn’t ask for that,” I said. “You know that, Owen.”

“As you made dumb decision after another, with that asshole, I had to do something.”

“Mom always liked him.”

“She’s losing her mind,” Owen said.

I sucked in a shaky breath. I slapped at Owen and knocked the coffee mug out of his hand.
